Dare you tour spooky hall?
Budding ghost hunters weren't able to explain away their eerie
experiences with textbooks or science when they visited Astley Hall.
The teachers from Myerscough College, near Preston, were just a handful
of visitors who have experienced inexplicable events during the popular
ghost tours there.
The tours are led by visitor services officer Yvonne Thompson who got
the idea after spotting a lady dressed in Tudor clothing walking in the
grounds of the Grade I listed hall which dates back to the 1580s.
"When I saw the lady crossing the courtyard I just assumed it was
someone dressed in period costume for an event that must have been
happening at the hall, but then she vanished before my eyes," said
Yvonne.
"I thought my mind must have been playing tricks on me but when I
checked there were no events taking place that day and since then I have
witnessed many strange things I just can't explain."
She added: "I've heard the sound of children laughing in an upstairs
room when the hall has been closed, and many times I have heard Mozart
being played on the grand piano in the drawing room and when I have
walked into the room the music has stopped."
Parts of Astley Hall date back to the 16th century when it was built and
owned by the Charnock family.
Coun Mark Perks, Chorley's executive member for health, leisure and
well-being, said: "Lots of people who have been on the tours say they
heard, saw or felt strange things happening, but there are no special
effects or actors - there doesn't seem to be any rational explanation.
