SPOOKED out: Sadie Blythyn and Stephen Sherrington at Jam Street Cafe.
STAFF at a popular cafe say they are being driven mad by a mischievous
ghost called Charlie.
A series of spooky goings-ons have led managers at Jam Street Cafe in
Chorlton to believe that the spirit began playing pranks after being
disturbed by the refurbishment of a basement to turn it into a lounge
area.
The phantom's practical jokes include switching lights
on-and-off when no-one else is around.
A medium, who visited the Upper Chorlton Road bar in Whalley Range,
claims to have spoken to the ghoul, which appeared to her in the form of
an elderly old man. She says he told her that his name was Charlie.
Speculation that a supernatural presence was at work was first raised by
builders who worked on the conversion after they reported the electrical
supply going on and off for no apparent reason and felt an unexplained
presence.
Marek Bales, 29, who works at the cafe, said: "It was really weird
because one day this customer popped downstairs to use the toilet, and
when she came back up she just asked me out of the blue if we'd
had problems with the electricity.
"She'd never been in before so she couldn't have known
anything about it. But she said she was a medium and that she'd
seen and spoken to a ghost in the basement.
"Apparently he was a normal, friendly, gentle old man ghost called
Charlie, but he told her he was messing with us because he was upset
with all the digging work."
Manageress Sadie Blythyn added: "For a while it was really spooky going
downstairs.
"We try to keep him happy, but any time anything happens here we say it
must be Charlie."
One of the cafe's co-owners, Richard Garner, takes it all with a
pinch of salt.
He said: "I wasn't there when the medium came in and I've not
experienced the ghost myself so I'm quite cynical about it - until
something happens to me that is!"
