'Ghostly teenager gave me the shivers' May 11 2006 By Stephanie Turner
ANOTHER spooked-out driver has said that he too has seen the mysterious ghostly figure wandering across Cater-ham's bypass in the early hours. Daniel Southwell, who lives in South Croydon, has seen a girl walking up steps into the woods off the A22 on five separate occasions. The 32-year-old was sniggered at when he told friends what he had seen.
But he was astounded after reading the Surrey Mirror report on a full-scale police hunt sparked by drivers who had spotted a girl wandering across the road in the dark. Daniel first spotted the young girl, who he believes to be a teenager, six months ago. She was walking up some steps, near the brow of the hill, into the woods.
He said: "It was 2.50am and I thought it was extremely unusual to see someone along there at that time of the night. "I just forgot about it but I saw her again one month later, at exactly the same time in the early hours of the morning. "I would describe her as a teenager and she wearing a grey, hooded top.
"She was wearing a short skirt and short boots. The first time I saw her I was gobsmacked really. It didn't look real but I couldn't believe what I was seeing. "I have been speaking to people about it and they just say, 'whatever'. They all think I'm going mad." But one of Daniel's friends spotted the story in the newspaper and read it to him over the phone.
He added: "It was the strangest thing because it was exactly what I had told him I had seen. It freaked me out a bit really. "I know what I have seen. I just find it totally unusual that a young girl could be walking around in the pitch black when there is nobody about. "The other weekend, I actually got up at 2am and drove along there to see if she was there but I couldn't see her. "I always go cold when I drive along the bypass now."
David Willey from the North Surrey Paranormal Group said: "We are really interested in investigating this case. "These kind of cases are very interesting when so many people report the sightings and it has extra credibility because of police involvement." Have you seen the ghostly figure along the Caterham bypass?
