Two reportedly haunted buildings on the edge of Preston have contributed to Lancashire being named as a paranormal hotspot.

A new report analysing thousands of recorded incidents of ghost sightings and other paranormal activity puts Lancashire in third place – behind Yorkshire and London.

More than 500 incidents have been reported in the last 100 years, 511 to be exact.

Samlesbury Hall and Hoghton Tower are listed as two of the most haunted buildings in Britain with numerous paranormal reports within their walls and grounds.

The Strain Report was carried out by Reverend Lionel Fanthorpe, one of the UK’s leading authorities on the unexplained.

He said: “These research statistics are based on well over 50 years of our own professional investigative experience, extensive archives, police reports and widely accessible external data.

“These reported sightings and other types of witnesses’ experiences go back for a century.

“Our research and investigation has suggested that the UK harbours more vampires than Transylvania and that certain areas of Britain may be referred to as ‘horror hotspots’ not solely because of their vampire reports but also because of the number of reports of general paranormal phenomena emanating from them.”

Preston’s ghosts and ghouls are well documented, one of the most famous being the White Lady of Samlesbury Hall.

She is said to walk the galleries and rooms after her secret lover was killed by her brother in an ambush.
