FLIR Systems Incorporated recently released a new accessory for the iPhone. According to a report from the Epoch Times today, the new FLIR One device turns the popular smartphone into a thermal imaging camera and the price is just a fraction of the cost of other FLIR thermal imagers.
FLIR introduced the FLIR One iPhone accessory in July and the cost for the device is $349. FLIR is an acronym for forward looking infrared. Standard FLIR thermal imaging cameras usually go from $1000 up to $50,000.
The FLIR thermal imager first became popular when The Atlantic Paranormal Society paranormal investigators Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson used the device on Syfy's hit show "Ghost Hunters" back in 2004.
According to "Ghost Hunters" cast member and Technology Manager Steve Gonsalves, the device is the most sought-after piece of paranormal equipment. He explains on Syfy's website that the thermal imager allows paranormal investigators to see hot or cold spots by tracking temperature fluctuations in real time.
"It is, without a doubt, one of the most valuable tools we use at TAPS, and has provided us with one of the single most compelling pieces of paranormal evidence so far; the image of a full-bodied apparition captured on a locker at the Crescent Hotel," Gonsalves said.
Thermal imaging cameras aren't cheap. Gonsalves suggests that paranormal investigators try going to a fire department and asking if they have an out-of-date model that they want to sell. He also gives advice on how to use the device.
"Because spirits are composed of energy and energy emits radiation, you can theoretically use the thermal imaging camera to see a temperature artifact left over from a spirit’s passage. We've learned over several investigations that balls of cold temperature detected by the thermal imaging camera may indicate a sudden energy void caused by paranormal activity," he wrote.
