Villisca Axe Murder House, Villisca, IA
In 1912, this home was the site of the murder of Josiah Moore and his entire family. If you’re brave enough you can stay the night at the scene of the crime, but if you bail early (maybe because of the children’s voices and flying objects that have been reported) you won’t get refunded your $428 fee.

Jerome is America’s largest ghost town, and one that is supposedly populated with actual ghosts. There are more than spirits that are said to haunt the town. But Sammie Dean, a prostitute who was strangled by a customer, is the most notorious.

Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Fort Mifflin is one of the only remaining revolutionary war forts, and there is said to be serious paranormal activity in Casemate 11, the Officers’ Quarters, and the blacksmith shop.

Still operating as a brewpub, which is good because you can soak your terror in beer after coming face to face with the alleged poltergeist that haunts the halls.

The Sultan’s Palace, New Orleans, LA
NOLA is filled with voodoo culture and ghost stories, but the Sultan’s Palace is said to be haunted with the ghosts of one of the bloodiest (and unsolved) massacres in the town’s history.

Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, CO
Used as Stephen King’s inspiration for The Shining, you can still stay in this haunted relic. And don’t worry about room 237, in the actual hotel, it’s room 217 you want to avoid.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA
This former prison was home to Al Capone, the haunted landmark is still open for tours today. In October they stage a haunted house, in case you want some fake terror mixed in with your real terror.

The house in which Lizzie Borden killed people all over is open for tours, and for the brave, an overnight. Don’t forget to stop by the most grim gift shop ever.

The establishment opened in 1827 as the Genesee County Poor Farm, but it wasn’t until it became an antiques mall that the weirdness started to happen.
