Mystery Monday: Mercer County Haunted Theater
Posted: Aug 12, 2013 6:26 PM
An old theatre in Harrodsburg has long been thought to be haunted. It wasn't until paranormal investigators did some research, that they say they were able to find any proof.
"If you're here, give me a sign," the investigators can be heard asking in the dark theater. And in the same recording, noises are heard following the question.
Kentucky Paranormal's Jeff Sanford has been investigating haunted buildings for years. It's not everyday he says he captures the spirit world on audio or video. But at the Old Ragged Edge Community Theatre in Harrodsburg, he's done both.
"We've heard whistling, people have seen shadows, people have been touched. We've had doors open and close by themselves," Sanford said.
In an infrared video, Sanford says you can see the laser beams interrupted by what he believes is a figure that passed through the hallway twice. The theatre's sole employee, Tagan Cox, says many people claim to have seen the ghost in daylight.
"People have seen something white, and at first they think it's a person in a white shirt and it walks in front of my office toward the costume shop," Cox said.
It's in that costume shop upstairs many claim to have felt a strong energy. And downstairs, in the theatre that has stood since the 1800s, similar stories.
"Voices, or strange things, phones, clothes go missing. I think maybe something is here, but I think it likes me, so I'm comfortable," Cox said.
Some believe it could be the spirit of theatre founder Mary Chelf Jones, or a number of other people who once called the building home. And whether you're a skeptic like employee Tagan Cox, or an investigator like Sanford, he says it's important to keep your eyes and ears open because you never know what you may capture in the paranormal world.
