Wearing jeans, a red sweatshirt and cross trainers, John Zaffis greeted an applauding audience at Sussex County Community College Performing Arts with the signature opening of his SYFY television show, “I am the Haunted Collector.”
Zaffis has a 40 year career as a paranormal investigator, studying and training with famed paranormal, psychic couple Ed and Lorraine Warren, who just happen to be Zaffis’ aunt and uncle. Referred to as the "Godfather of the Paranormal," Zaffis was 16 years old when he saw his first spirit, his grandfather.
In the pre-Halloween Power Point presentation, Zaffis amazed the paranormal savvy group of 75 college students and the public, with eerie photographs, EVPs and even segments of an actual exorcism.
Some of the photos which Zaffis explained, "rule out all logical explanation” included a hooded monk, a levitating coffee pot and misty forms of energy. The group experienced actual EVPs or electronic voice phenomenon from long dead children saying hello to disembodied wicked laughter.
“Deceased family members are always around us, they’re nothing to fear, they only want to communicate with us as they once did,” Zaffis stated.
The presentation concluded by showing scenes from two disturbing exorcisms, one listed as the Parker exorcism, which inspired the movie, "A Haunting in Connecticut."
“Lately people have been screamin’ demon," Zaffis said. "Possessions are real however not everyday happenings." He stresses that every spirit is not demonic.
He opened the forum to questions and answers, his personal favorite.
“You can learn many new things with Q and A,” he chuckled.
Ideas that children can be super sensitive to spirit activity, women seem to have a sixth sense in experiencing paranormal activity over men, shadow people are still beyond definition and the Ground Zero area does have activity were all touched on. When Zaffis was asked if there are animal spirits, he answered a definite yes.
Lastly, Zaffis discussed the hundreds of haunted items he has removed from homes. These items are currently part of Zaffis’ Paranormal Museum which will soon re-open in Monroe, Connecticut. Some of those haunted items included swords, ritual items, dolls and toys.
