All the while rumors of ghosts and haunts and a dark past were passed down among the locals.
The sometimes surreal decorations — hundreds of pieces of art fill the rooms – are complemented by historic tales of murder, prostitution and deception.
More than a dozen psychics, professional paranormal investigators and religious demonologists have explored the hotel including the Cambria County Chapter of Pennsylvania Ghost Hunters Society and the SCARED! Paranormal Investigation Team, of Vermont.
"I do think there's something unusual to this building," Murphy said. "So many people have reported strange events and we've had so many people come in and investigate over the years."
"Haunted Collector" is a new show on Syfy that focuses on paranormal investigator John Zaffis and his family as they travel to unusual locations and try to gather evidence of hauntings, according to the website.
Whether the group found definitive evidence of the paranormal will not be revealed until the show airs this week at 9 p.m.
"I really can't say anything about the findings. I signed a non-disclosure agreement," Murphy said.
The local author and filmmaker did say that whatever the outcome of the show, he has come to terms with his home.
"I feel like I'm part of the building now," he said. "One of the problems I have with some of these shows — not necessarily this one, of course — is that they like to portray people of victims of the paranormal."
"I definitely don't need to be rescued," he said.
To celebrate the latest appearance of the historic structure on television, Murphy will mount a projector outside the building and broadcast the show for friends and visitors on Wednesday.
"I thought it would be a fun night," Murphy said. "People can come to the park and watch along with us."
