The Old North State Winery resides in a building that dates back to the 1800s, but it has a checkered past. It used to be a hardware store that carried dynamite until an explosion killed several people. Add to that, rumors of a suicide on the second floor, and you've got one scary place to work.
Manager Chris Goughary said he was the biggest skeptic of any paranormal activity.
"Now that I have seen it, and experienced it, I have no choice but to believe," Goughary said.
He and his workers know all too well that spirits walk the halls.
"I've been coming out of the kitchen and going up to the front and heard footsteps going up the stairwell and I'm standing there looking up the stairwell and I hear footsteps as if another human being is walking up the steps in front of me," he explained.
A bartender, Brittney Lee, said when she's downstairs she can hear the floors scooting, as if someone is rearranging furniture upstairs. She said doors also open and close on their own.
Eric teamed up with Jim Hall and his team from Haunted North Carolina to see if they could find any evidence of the activity in the building.
Using electromagnetic meters, night vision cameras and years of paranormal research, they wired the house for sound and audio.
One of the hot spots was the basement storage area. So at about 2:00 am after hours of nothing, the team decided to investigate in pitch black armed with night vision. Eric said they weren't expecting what happened next.
"All of a sudden my left arm lifted itself of its own accord. I had no control over it," claimed Morgan Lee, one of the people in the room. "I got cold all of a sudden and started shaking."
Lee said the hunters asked if the ghost wanted everyone to leave, and her armed went up in the air again.
"I wanted to leave. I had no other thought other than to get outta here," Lee said.
No one at the winery will close the store alone these days. It seems that these hallways hold untold stories that might be best left untold.
The Old North State Winery named their premiere wine after their ghost. It's a red wine called "Restless Spirit."
