FORGET Brisbane’s good looks and plethora of great attractions, the River City is also one of the most haunted cities in the world.
Spooky ghosts are said to haunt the hallways of many Brisbane institutions, such as Old Government House, Parliament House, Brisbane Arcade and even City Hall, according to new book The International Directory of Haunted Places and website http://www.hauntedplaces.com.
What’s more, Brisbane’s oldest surviving residence Newstead House, built in 1846 is said to be home to a ghoul; a 12-year-old girl whose favourite pastime is rearranging the shoes in one of the rooms.
Now, ourbrisbane.com has put together a list of ghost tours, DIY ghoul hunts, spooky hot spots and scary excursions for the curious cats who dare to find out more.
Spokeswoman Carla Christensen said City Hall, in particular, was a special haunted place of interest because it is said to house not one but three ghosts.
``There’s an elderly lady, a maintenance man who rides the lifts who is rumoured to have died in a freak accident, and then there’s an American sailor who was stabbed to death in a fight with another sailor in the tea room,’’ Ms Christensen said.
``Brisbane has such a colourful history. A lot of people are keen to visit the haunted places and research the stories behind them or maybe even see a ghost for themselves.’’
