Ghost Whisperer finds new haunt on Sci Fi
US cablenet Sci Fi Channel has acquired off-net rights to drama series Ghost Whisperer from CBS TV Distribution, as part of a larger deal that includes Charmed, Early Edition and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Sci Fi will air Ghost Whisperer, which stars Jennifer Love Hewitt (left) as a woman who can talk to spirits, in a weekly four-hour primetime stack beginning fall 2009. The channel will also schedule programming stunts with full-day marathons, and will simulcast the show in HD.
In addition, Sci Fi will have access to shows in the CBS library, including Star Trek: The Next Generation, which it will premiere on June 2; Charmed; Early Edition; Highlander; Friday The Thirteenth: The Series; and sitcom Mork & Mindy, among others.
In a separate deal, Sci Fi has also acquired Children of the Grave, a horror documentary from twin filmmakers the Booth Brothers, from +Entertainment and Spooked Productions. The deal includes a commitment to a sequel, tentatively entitled Children of the Grave 2.
Thomas Vitale, Sci Fi's senior VP of programming and original movies, said: "Ghost Whisperer is an incredible addition to Sci Fi's programming inventory. As part of Sci Fi's primetime line-up, Ghost Whisperer will appeal to our existing audience, while bringing in new viewers, including more women.
"The paranormal is very popular with our audience, as evidenced by the huge success of our original series Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International."
Ghost Whisperer is produced by Sanders/Moses Productions in association with ABC Studios and CBS Paramount Network Television. It premiered in 2005 on CBS.
